To live in the present moment.
As humans, many of us will look to the past to ensure we do not recreate past mistakes and hurt, while others may look to the future for what they want to create. Both of these are great tools if you learn the lessons of the past and/or utilize the skills of visualization to manifest dreams for your future. However, staying in either place too long can ensure a delay of your dreams coming to fruition.
Remaining in the past will only continue the patterns you want to release. For instance, if you have a relationship in the past that did not work and you experienced hurt. If you remain focused on the hurt experienced, you may close off your heart to the learning opportunity, as well as to any present relationships. If you focus on the future, and what you need to do to get where you want to go, then you miss out on what is in front of you. For instance, if you are having a conversation with someone and you are focusing on what you need to get done tomorrow you miss what that person was saying in the moment.
If you are experiencing lack of clarity within life, I encourage you to shift yourself into the present moment. For instance, the other day I was in between coaching sessions and experience upset because I had some pain in my heart surface within me from a past relationship. Plus, I was experiencing stress because I was focused on the things I needed to get done. I realized in that moment that I was torn between the past and future and missing the present. I took control of my thoughts and centered back into myself and the moment. I did this by taking five deep breathes and then reminding myself to live in the moment of now. What does now look like for me? I am sitting on the floor typing a blog to share some learnings with others. I am drinking water and listening to inspirational music. By doing this, the pain in my heart disappeared as well as the anxiety I was experiencing. I was residing in the purity of the now.
You may notice each of the questions below focus on your physical being. Our bodies always reside in the present moment and you can use this fact to ground back into the now. Take a moment to focus on your entire body. How do you feel? Are you comfortable? Are you breathing easily or holding your breath? Are you relaxed? Truly any question that will bring you back to your body and your surroundings can help you get back to the present moment. For instance, some of us plan out our day as we are driving to work. Therefore, you are now hanging out in the future and not fully present to the fact you are driving a potentially deadly machinery. Pull yourself back by hearing the music playing in your car, or feel your hands on the steering wheel and pay attention to how your body is nestled into the seat. Simple, but important, because you could miss your stop and be late for work, and for that important meeting which would have made your future bright.
By residing in the present, you find clarity, because your mind is not cluttered with past judgments, nor is it cluttered with a to-do list. In this space, you will hear yourself and your heart with less effort and you will know what action to take if any are required.
If you are finding it difficult to focus on the present, remember that our egos use the past and future as distractions for us creating in the now. Ego is attempting to “protect” us from feeling pain and disappointment. In truth, ego is really delaying each of us from stepping into our authentic self or life purpose. In turn, we experience pain and disappointment. I encourage you to graciously thank your ego for trying to “protect” you from the past, which no longer exists, or the future, which does not exist yet, and move into the treasure of the present.
In the true moment, you will find inspiration, joy, and gratitude. You will be able to hear your heart more clearly as there is no clutter in the mind to distract and confuse you. You will walk within your authentic self naturally and with ease.
